2023 Consortia Workshop on Nuclear Security and Nonproliferation

2022 NSSC3 Kickoff and Advisory Board Meeting

The Nuclear Science and Security Consortium is delighted to celebrate the commencement of its third performance period. Our new team of now 11 universities is working to build a strong pipeline of new technical talent for U.S. DOE national laboratories while engaging in research and development (R&D) in nuclear science, security, and proliferation detection. This event marks the formal introduction of our new team to the academic and lab communities, and also serves as the annual meeting of our External Advisory Board. More information here.

2020 NSSC Virtual Scholar Showcase

The Nuclear Science and Security Consortium (NSSC) invited representatives from the National Laboratories and other government agencies to attend an online showcase, which will feature research presentations from our graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. 2020 University Program Review

The 2020 UPR Meeting had been planned to be held in early June in Knoxville, TN, but was cancelled due to COVID-19 precautions.

2019 NSSC Fall Workshop and Advisory Board Meeting

The 2019 NSSC workshop and NSSC advisory board meeting, held Oct. 8-9 and organized jointly by LLNL and the University of California, Berkeley, was attended by more than 60 university students, postdocs and faculty and by more than 50 national lab scientists from several national labs. 2018 NSSC Fall Workshop and Advisory Board Meeting

The Nuclear Science and Security Consortium Fall Workshop and Advisory Board Meeting was held October 1 – 2, 2018 at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) in Livermore, California. The event featured updates on NSSC programs and accomplishments, student oral presentations and a poster session, individual reports by NSSC Focus Area Leads, and a closed discussion session for the EAB. 2018 University Program Review

The Nuclear Science and Security Consortium (NSSC), a multi-institution initiative headquartered at UC Berkeley, participated in the annual Department of Energy (DOE) National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation Research and Development (DNN R&D) University Program Review (UPR) meeting on June 5-7, 2018 in Ann Arbor, MI, hosted by University of Michigan. Ms. Lisa E. Gordon-Hagerty, DOE Under Secretary for Nuclear Security and NNSA Administrator, provided the opening address at the program review to an audience of more than 285 students, faculty, national laboratory scientists, and DOE NNSA program officials, including Dr. Edward Watkins, Assistant Deputy Administrator, DNN R&D and Dr. Victoria Franques, Senior Program Manager, DNN R&D. 2017 22nd Technical Meeting of the NSDD

The 22nd Technical Meeting of the Nuclear Structure and Decay Data Evaluators network was held from 22 to 26 May 2017, at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, California, USA. More details available on the NSSC website and the IAEA website.

2016 NSSC Fall Engagement Workshop

Representatives from the NNSA and faculty and students from NSSC’s partner institutions convened in Berkeley, California in September 2016 to delve into the NSSC’s research focus areas and discuss plans for collaboration amongst partners in the next phase of the consortium. The workshop concluded at LLNL with a reception and poster session featuring presentations on lab-directed research and projects. More info here

2016 NSSC Kick Off Event

The Nuclear Science and Security Consortium in conjunction with SORMA West 2016, held a Kick-Off Seminar and Reception on May 23rd, 2016. This event celebrated a continuation of our efforts to train the next generation of nuclear security experts and launch the next phase of the NSSC. Attendees included the NSSC executive team as well as representatives from NNSA and all eight partner universities and five partner labs. NSSC Fellows and Affiliates attended the event and presented posters on their research and work. The event served as a great introduction to the next phase of the NSSC. More info on the event here

January 14-15, 2015 at  UC Berkeley. Organized by NSSC & MIIS/CNS. Hands-On workshop on open source tools, satellite imagery, for nonproliferation applications. Participants gathered OSINT data from commercial and governmental imagery sources, social media, wikis, photo blogs, news stories, etc. Acquired commercial/governmental satellite imagery. Identified some basic nuclear and missile related equipment, processes, and infrastructure. Mapped and modeled nuclear and missile related equipment and facilities
