The NSSC’s research in nuclear chemistry and radiochemistry focuses on nuclear forensics and international safeguards. This effort is developing the next generation of radiochemists with the necessary skills to engage in and develop novel methods for determination of signatures for pre- and post- detonation nuclear forensics. Studies encompass basic, foundational research as well as materials of direct interest to nuclear forensics. Research efforts include isotope production, radioelement speciation, coordination chemistry and signature studies of various materials.

Nuclear chemistry and radiochemistry research is conducted by students and faculty at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, Michigan State University, and at the Washington University at St. Louis, in collaboration with scientists and researchers at the NSSC’s partner national laboratories.
