The Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation is pleased to host the 8th annual Winter Conference on February 6 - 7 2012. The conference will again be held at the UCDC Center in Washington, D.C. We are excited to announce that this year’s conference is co-sponsored by the Institute for Nuclear Materials Management (INMM), and we look forward to an integrated conference drawing from both communities. Activities will begin Sunday evening, February 5 with an opening reception.

This is the Call for Papers for the conference. In addition to organizing panels around the current research and policy interests of the PPNT alumni we plan to devote at least one panel to the direct interests of INMM in exploring nuclear security, nuclear trafficking, and nuclear transport issues. If there is sufficient interest in doing so, or if we have proposals we are unable to integrate into a panel, we would also like to hold a poster session to exhibit ongoing and proposed research being performed by members of the PPNT community. The poster session is open to everyone, including those participating on organized panels, those wanting to supplement the panel discussions, or those wishing to present nascent research or work on a topic not reflected in other sessions.

The Winter Conference brings forward the energy, research and focus of the IGCC Public Policy and Nuclear Threats community. As such, we have three recent PPNT alumni organizing the conference program. Raymond Wolfgang is an engineer at Sandia National Labs and a Summer 2011 alum. Rebecca Davis Gibbons, also a 2011 alum, is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Government at Georgetown University. Jeffrey Fields holds a PhD in international relations, is an analyst at the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, and is a 2007 PPNT alum. The broad background of our three co-chairs is meant to encourage a wide variety of participation and backgrounds among presenters.

As it is every year, this conference is a chance for PPNT alumni to share what they have been working on, reconnect with friends and colleagues, discuss the impact and potential of research, and meet the newest alumni from the 2011 bootcamp. We can include a few non-PPNT alumni as presenters, especially if you believe their participation is integral to a panel. Please send a brief abstract (250-300 words) of your paper or poster or an outline of your panel to the organizing committee (emails listed below) as soon as possible, but no later than 1 January 2012.. Papers selected for the conference should be submitted by 27 January 2012 in order to prepare them as working papers to be distributed on IGCC’s website.

As it is every year, the Winter Conference is also open to the public and there is no registration fee. The PPNT program will cover the costs of attendance for all PPNT Summer boot-camp alumni and any non-PPNT alumni presenters. We do have a limited number of spaces, however, so those interested in attending should contact IGCC Conference Coordinator Laura Martin (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ">This email address is being protected from spambots. We are unable to offer support to individuals who wish to attend but are neither alumni nor presenting; anyone interested in attending should pre-register with Laura Martin by 31 January 2012.
