The 2025 NSSC-LLNL Nuclear Security and Nonproliferation Summer School will feature lectures and hands-on experimental modules covering various aspects of nuclear risk reduction. Scholars will form teams to engage in hands-on experimental modules aimed at tackling challenges in warhead verification, emergency response, and nuclear forensics. In the Warhead Verification module, scholars will conduct neutron and gamma-ray measurements to confirm the presence or absence of nuclear and moderator materials before and after simulated dismantlement. The Emergency Response module challenges scholars to characterize an unidentified threat using passive neutron and gamma-ray measurements, alongside active interrogation techniques. Lastly, in the Nuclear Forensics module, scholars will investigate and trace the origins of nuclear and radiological materials through measuring radiation signatures and isotopic compositions of simulated nuclear samples.
This workshop will also include tours and an opening reception where scholars will have an opportunity to connect with LLNL scientists from across the laboratory. Upon successful completion of the workshop, scholars will receive a certificate of achievement recognizing their accomplishments.

Flying to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
It is recommended to fly into the Oakland International Airport, airport code OAK. The Oakland International Airport is 30 miles from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Apart from the Oakland International Airport, Livermore is within close distance to the San Francisco International Airport (55 miles away), and the Mineta San Jose International Airport (35 miles away).
Getting to the Lawrence Livermore Campus
For those commuting to the Lab:
While commuting remains an option, please note that for the first day of the school, you’ll need to park at the DoubleTree Hilton for security reasons as the designated shuttle will assist in accessing the campus and completing the badging process at LLNL. This will be required for all summer school participants unless you have an ongoing/on-site appointment with LLNL. During the first day, available parking spots will be identified, giving you the option to either park on-site thereafter or continue using the hotel shuttle.
For those taking the shuttle:
On Tuesday, June 10th, the shuttle will depart to the Lab at 7am. For the remainder of the summer school, the shuttle will depart from the hotel at 7:30am and return at around 5pm (unless stated otherwise).
Additional Transportation:
- San Joaquin RTD Commuter: This commuter bus provides a way to get to the LLNL campus from Stockton, Lathrop, and Tracy
- Altamont Corridor Express (ACE) Train: The ACE train provides routes between Stockton and Livermore
- Tri-Valley Wheels BART Commuter Connection: Wheels bus services offers a route from the Dublin BART station to Livermore
- Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART): View BART’s website to see available schedules and routes across the Bay Area
