Radiation detection remains a foundational discipline in the fields of nuclear nonproliferation, safeguards, monitoring and verification, dismantlement, and emergency response. The Radiation Detection Science Focus Area spans the full range of radiation detection research and development, including detector materials, signal readout and processing, and the integration of hardware and software components into stationary and mobile, manned and unmanned systems. Students gain hands-on experience across this pipeline, from synthesizing and characterizing new detector materials to designing and testing integrated detection systems in simulated operational scenarios.
Key Personnel in Focus Area:
- Co-lead: A. Danagoulian, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
- Co-lead: A. Di Fulvio, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign
