


Advanced reactors differ significantly from the traditional fleet in their design, fuel, and fuel cycle characteristics, changes that can pose new challenges for nuclear nonproliferation efforts. The Nuclear Engineering Focus Area engages students and faculty in research and development aimed at mitigating these risks, aligning with recommendations to establish guardrails for a “more proliferation-resistant nuclear future.” Students also perform research in emerging fusion fuel cycle challenges, building the technical foundation needed to support next-generation nuclear energy systems.
