


Advances in materials continue to push the boundaries of technology across a wide range of engineering disciplines, creating new challenges in the nuclear security space. At the core of many of these advancements lie fundamental materials science questions. Addressing these challenges, and anticipating future ones, requires a strong foundation in materials science, paired with specialized training in nuclear materials fundamentals, characterization techniques, and predictive modeling. In the Nuclear Materials Focus Area, faculty and students conduct research and development with the national laboratories in advanced manufacturing, the application and development of characterization techniques, and the behavior of materials in extreme environments to meet the evolving challenges of nuclear security.
