Laser Systems Engineering and Operations Division (LSEO) of the Engineering Directorate at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has an opening for an Instrumentation/Sensor Engineer for the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science Directorate (NIF & PS). NIF has many unique state-of-the-art instrumentation systems that capture ionizing radiation signals (x-rays, gammas, neutrons, etc.) into the electrical domain that will be used to conduct high energy density (HED) physics experiments. The successful candidate will work with experimentalists to define performance requirements for new diagnostic instruments, designing, developing, and specifying large format 2D sensors, including Charge Coupled Device (CCD) and Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) devices. Responsibilities also include fielding of the instrumentation at the NIF and possibly other laser facilities around the country. Will develop long-term development plans which will include other imaging technologies, such as Charge Injected Device (CID), and gated CCDs to meet programmatic requirements. Will work with outside vendors to help develop radiation hardened cameras to work in the challenging NIF radiation environment. This position will report to the Target Area Engineering Group Leader.
The successful candidate will develop electronic recording devices to extend known capabilities to the next generation of integrated instrument systems. Will work as a technical contributor on multidisciplinary teams and will contribute to the fulfillment of project and organizational goals.
